K.S. Radhakrishnan is a distinguished Indian sculptor whose artistic journey spans over five decades, marked by a profound engagement with the medium of bronze and a deep-rooted connection to Indian sculptural traditions. Born on February 7, 1956, in Kuzhimattom, Kottayam, Kerala, Radhakrishnan was inspired by his uncle, P.N. Narayanan Kutty, to pursue the arts. His early exposure to painting under the influence of his uncle laid the foundation for his creative exploration, which would later shift towards sculpture.
Radhakrishnan's formal education in art began at the prestigious Kala Bhavana at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, where he enrolled in 1974. It was here that he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1979 and later his Master of Fine Arts. Santiniketan, founded by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, provided a nurturing environment that emphasized learning from nature and the integration of art and life. This philosophy deeply influenced Radhakrishnan's approach to art.
During his time at Santiniketan, Radhakrishnan was mentored by two significant figures in modern Indian art, Ramkinkar Baij and Sarbari Roy Choudhury. Baij's robust and earthy style, along with his monumental scale, left a lasting impression on Radhakrishnan. In contrast, Roy Choudhury's subtle modeling and intimate scale provided a different perspective. Both mentors were accomplished portraitists, and their influence is evident in Radhakrishnan's early works, which combined the dynamism of Baij with the finesse of Roy Choudhury.
Radhakrishnan's sculptures are known for their lithe forms and a sense of lightness and spirit. This distinctive style emerged in the early 1990s, inspired by a Santal boy named Musui who modeled for him in Santiniketan. Musui, with his playful and fun-loving nature, became a recurring character and symbol in Radhakrishnan's work, representing a state of being that is free and unencumbered. The artist later created a fictional counterpart for Musui, a female figure named Maiya, adding a narrative dimension to his sculptures.
The themes of Radhakrishnan's work are diverse, ranging from the celebration of sensuality to the exploration of migration and memory. In the late 1990s, he was drawn to the lives of migrants in Delhi, which he depicted using tiny mass-produced figures that lacked individual identity. These works reflected the polarity of his world, contrasting the playful Musui and Maiya with the faceless immigrants, each representing different aspects of human experience.
Radhakrishnan's preference for modeling and bronze casting sets him apart from many of his contemporaries. He recharges the age-old sculptural process with a new sensibility, making him a modernist with a clear vision and ambition. His works often evoke a sense of intimacy and universality, finding a balance between personal commemoration and public engagement.
His sculptures have been exhibited extensively across India and internationally, and several of his works are installed in public collections around the world. Radhakrishnan has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the best sculpture award from the Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Calcutta and a research grant from the Lalit Kala Akademi to work at Garhi Studios in New Delhi.
Radhakrishnan's artistic achievements are not limited to his sculptures. He has also been recognized for his contributions to the art community, serving as a jury member for various exhibitions and contributing to the discourse on art through his insights and experiences.
